Sevenoaks & District Football League & Cup Round–Up (17/11/07)
Smiths Cup
There is nothing quite like Cup football to provide a few unexpected results and on Saturday the Smiths Charity Cup ties lived up to this expectation.
Undefeated Sevenoaks Town A, Hildenborough Athletic and Kemsing United Reserves all undefeated leaders of their respective Divisions all crashed out of the Competition.
In the Senior Cup favourite’s Sevenoaks Town A and neighbours Borough Green United produced a rousing Cup tie at Greatness Park, in which no fewer than eleven goals were scored before the latter got the odd goal to qualify for a semi-final match against Eynsford. The A team and League’s leading goal scorers conceded more goals than in their previous eight matches. It was a difficult tie to referee, at times bad tempered and vociferous but United were delighted to have won the encounter against such strong opposition.Fergus Farmer proved to be a hero for the victors scoring a hat trick with other strikes coming through Scott Dixon (2) and Jamie Fraser. Ace marksman Joe Creasey scored twice for the A team with other credits coming through Ben Agana, Steve Clarke and Dave Wood.
In another closely contested tie Eynsford just had the scoring edge over visiting Kemsing United to win 3-2. Mark Potter and Craig Jakeway were amongst the Eynsford credits.
The Nomads and Halstead United quarter-final tie was postponed due to the latter’s involvement in the Sevenoaks Charity Senior Cup but Sevenoaks Weald made progress seeing-off the challenge of hosts St. Lawrence to win 2-0. Matt Crompton scored both goals, the first coming after a surging run down the right flank by Andrew Stringer and a cross which found Crompton.
In the Premier Cup there was a shock exit for favourites Hildenborough Athletic. Goals by Chris Tidd and Jack Edmeads in extra time gave Dunton Green a 3-1 advantage after normal time had failed to separate the two teams. The victors will now face the winners of the delayed quarter-final match between Eynsford Reserves and Halstead United Reserves.
Ide Hill will now fancy their chances of qualifying for a final spot after defeating Kingsdown Racers 3-1. The two well matched teams produced another excellent match following the League encounter the previous week in which they shared eight goals. Goals by Billy Cornwell (2) and Spencer King gave the Hill a passage through to a semi-final spot against AW London. Referee Ray Perry controlled the game well.
The match between AW London and Fleetdown United A was a typically scrappy affair. The home team had the better of the first half exchanges while Fleetdown shaded the second period. AW London went ahead during the first period when a Tom McNally corner was converted by Bill Payne from close range. Fleetdown United A had a goal disallowed for a foul on the hosts keeper and then an amazing goal line clearance by Antony Croissant saved the day for AW London. Croissant threw himself at a shot with the goal at the strikers mercy and the ball rebounded off his shin pad and over the crossbar. The game was made safe when a shot by Payne hit the bar and dropped into the path of Kirk Foran who calmly tapped the ball into the net
Kingsdown Racers Reserves ran riot over Crockham Hill to chalk-up a 12-0 victory. The current Junior Cup holders will now be firm favourites to make progress in the development of the team and lift the Intermediate trophy. The tie was a personal triumph for Luke Smith who hit the back of the Crockers net on no fewer than six occasions. The best of the bunch came after ten minutes with an overhead kick. Also amongst the goals were Jamie Height (2), Steve Baker and David Kent.
A Nathan Butters hat trick was the highlight of Chipstead A team’s narrow 3-2 win over Riverhead United. Butters header during the closing stages settled a closely contested affair. The winners now face Tonbridge Baptist Church in a semi-final tie, this after the Church side had beaten Hadlow Rovers 2-1. It was an enthralling game for the spectators with both teams intent on putting on a determined but controlled display. Baptist Church went ahead during the first half through an opportunist goal by Daniel King. Hadlow Rovers then equalised with a fine team goal and header. With ten minutes play of the first half remaining Baptist Church restored their lead when Danny Smith outpaced the Rovers defence before sliding the ball passed the keeper. The second half was a closely contested affair with both team reluctant to push too many players forward although Baptist Church produced the better scoring chances.
Goals by Mike McSweeney, Luke Parr and Matt Levitt gave Seal 3rd an unexpected 3-2 win over Hildenborough Athletic Reserves but they now face a daunting visit to free scoring Kingsdown Racers Reserves.
Chipstead B provided a shock result in the Junior section by defeating favourites Kemsing United Reserves 4-3. With the scores delicately balanced at three apiece and with virtually the last kick of the tie Ritchie Freeman rose above the Kemsing defence to head home from a Julian Pullen free kick. The tie ebbed and flowed throughout. Kemsing United took the lead but then lost it to a Nick Carter strike. Into the second half Carter scored his second goal with a simple tap-in after a flighted ball by Reg Law had beaten the visiting keeper. Phil Moore then stretched the lead again with a simple goal. Kemsing United Reserves then rallied pulling back the deficit to equalise and as extra time beckoned Freeman snatched the winner much to the joy of his team mates.
Tonbridge Baptist Church Reserves completed a good day for the club by defeating Wilderpark Reserves 2-1 while Orpington 4th qualified for a semi-final place with a 2-0 victory against Ide Hill Reserves. They will now meet Dunton Green Reserves who overcame Borough Green with a 6-3 advantage. In-form striker Lee Gower notched four goals while Sam Goode and Dave Purday from the penalty spot also added their names to the score sheet.
League Fixtures
There was a much reduced League programme. In the Premier Division Ightham and Seal contested a 1-1 drawn encounter. Steve George, with a header from a Chris Gardner cross, put the mid-Kent side ahead but Seal, with virtually one chance, levelled during the second half.
Sevenoaks Weald Reserves picked up their first win of the season by defeating visiting Eynsford Reserves 3-2 in Division One. Weald came from behind twice before getting the winning goal. The visitors could have gone 3-1 up but for a missed penalty. Patrick Feast (2) and Ian Hindley scored for the victors. An own goal and one from Jim Williams accounted for Eynsford’s credits.
A hat trick by Ashley Wells, two goals from Joe Nagle and one from Steve Gilford helped Seal Reserves to a comfortable 6-2 win over Westerham 3rd who were left still searching for their first success of the campaign.
Russell Tompkins (2) and Simon Lynch produced the all important goals in Halstead United Reserves 3-2 advantage over hosts Orpington 3rd while in Division Two Otford United 3rd and Old Boars were level at two apiece at the final whistle. Otford United 3rd went ahead after only ninety seconds play but Old Boars soon put this poor start behind them to create a host of scoring opportunities which all went begging. Into the second half Pete Surrage equalised and then another goal followed from William Lee Kemp . At 2-2 the game could have gone either way but first the villagers scored which was then followed by a Jonathan Lee Kemp goal who spotted the keeper off his goal-line. Carl Gawley (2) and Mark Hadlow scored for the losers.
